Another Toronto FC season has passed us by and like the first 2 seasons, the 2009 campaign was filled with many ups and downs. Inconsistency was again apparent as 16 points were collectively given away by the Reds in the last 15 minutes of play this season.
We saw the injection of 4 quality players in Dwayne DeRosario, Adrian Serioux, Ali Gerba and Julian de Guzman. At times they all showed us bright lights of promise but in combination with the rest of the squad, showed us a lack of team chemistry.
We paid special tribute to inaugural franchise goal scorer Danny Dichio as he elected to hang up his playing cleats for an internal coaching job.
Youngsters such as White, Gomez, Attakora and Sanyang showed us hope that as the more experienced players move on, Toronto FC has a very bright future.
Frei remained solid throughout the season and Edwards provided us with some quality back-up goal keeping at the end of the campaign.
There are many highlights and lowlights to discuss from this past season, but I don’t feel it necessary to go into depth. Admittedly, a 5-0 loss at the last game of the season to decide your playoff death is a big and bitter pill to swallow.
So I’d like to focus on the near future of this young franchise and the importance of training together under a probable new coaching system in the off season.
On paper, this is one of the better teams in the league, with key talent at all points of the pitch. Unfortunately, they’ve ultimately lacked the chemistry to work together properly, score goals and shut down opponents.
Under proper leadership and guidance, I feel this team has a chance to come charging full speed out of the 2010 season gates and prove what we’ve expected out of this squad.
So have great off-season TFC fans and don’t worry the best is yet to come!
PS: Oh, and did I mention we’re getting real grass at BMO Field next season :)
Pssst... Also, stay tuned for the new interactive TOFC.ca coming next season!
